President's Report for November

I'm sad to report that Rich Walter passed away on October 29.  Rich joined us 50 years ago.  Rich entered a Hospice Care facility in October near the Puyallup Trailhead.  He was suffering from heart failure with no more Care options.  Rich was a member when we marked the first STP course and tabulated the Race results.  Rich rode his bike to work before Hwy 512 was a freeway.  Rich served many roles with us including being the Ride Captain for over five years.  Rich worked with Louie Boitano and me at Mount Tahoma Trails Association.  He took over Copper Creek Hut and rebuilt it.  He served on the MTTA Board as well.  In 2024, Rich rode the Willapa Hills Trail with Thomas Harrison,  Charlene Dorward and me.  Rich rode 40 miles from Rainbow Falls State Park to South Bend in 95° heat.  The next day we rode back in ideal conditions.  Rest in Peace Rich.

From Rails to Trails

From Rails to Trails on PBS, narrated by Edward Norton, explores the social movement to transform thousands of miles of abandoned railroads into public trails for cycling and walking. This effort has led to the creation of a national network of scenic, car-free paths, including many in our own region.

Pierce County Trails Conference: A Celebration of Progress and a Call to Action

This year's Annual Pierce County Trails Conference, hosted by ForeverGreen Trails (FGT) on September 25th, proved to be both an inspiring celebration of our region's active transportation achievements and an eye-opening educational experience for me. As a first-time attendee, I left energized about the future of trails in Pierce County — and convinced of the critical role we all play in supporting this vision.
