I did my second Cranksgiving this year and it continues to be one of the best things I do on a bicycle.
We gathered together at Lincoln Park for some pre-ride instructions. I'm glad that a few of us from TWBC participated. Leon Nettles, Executive Director of 2nd Cycle, led out. The event is very well managed by 2nd cycle. That includes some riders from 2nd Cycle making sure that intersections are safe. Included in the group were some young kids. I was impressed with their stamina. One little cyclist looked to be spinning at about 100 rpms the whole ride. Leon shared this report:
Cranksgiving has been running in this current iteration for four years now, originally thanks to a few amazing folks at the Tacoma–Pierce County Health Department who envisioned an event that could make a big impact with minimal barriers. 2nd Cycle has helped organize it for the last three years, and this was our biggest turnout yet.
We had 51 participants join us this year, and together we were able to donate two full pallets of supplies to the Eloise Food Bank. The event continues to grow, and we’re excited to build on that momentum for next year.
I definitely plan to keep showing up each year. It feels good to give back to the community. And it is a big bonus to ride with some truly awesome fellow cyclists. The ride is short and easy, so I see it as something that is great as a family activity.
I hope next year that we can have a big group of TWBC members join in. Keep an eye on Tacoma on the Go and 2nd Cycle for information as we get closer to Cranksgiving 2026.
