TWBC Members at the Spiketon Ditch Bridge Ribbon Cutting |
Last week was very active for the Tacoma Washington Bicycle Club! From our monthly general meeting to multiple community events, TWBC members have been out and about, demonstrating our commitment to cycling advocacy and community engagement.
Pedaling with Politicians
Thursday, September 11th marked Downtown on the Go's annual Pedal With Politicians event, where TWBC Vice President Dave Wittenberg and I had the opportunity to ride alongside local leaders. This invaluable experience gave us insights into recent infrastructure improvements while also providing a glimpse into exciting plans on the horizon. Events like these are crucial for keeping TWBC informed about developments that directly impact our cycling community.

Bringing Joy Through Bikeshaw Rides
Friday brought another rewarding collaboration as Dave and I continued TWBC's partnership with Cycling Over Sixty to provide bikeshaw rides for Elesio residents. This time, we tried something special—pedaling along the outer loop of Five Mile Drive, which is beautifully closed to cars. There's something magical about experiencing the residents' joy as they get back out on bikes, and Five Mile Drive's scenic beauty made these rides particularly fun.
The gratitude from the residents was overwhelming, and they thanked TWBC for helping make these rides possible. We're actively seeking new "pilots" for this program! If you enjoy riding and want to make a real difference in someone's day, please reach out for information on how you can get involved.
Celebrating Infrastructure Wins
Saturday brought us to the Spiketon Ditch Bridge opening on the Foothills Trail, where several TWBC members and board representatives joined Pierce County Parks in celebrating this significant milestone. It was especially gratifying when Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello gave TWBC a shout-out for our advocacy efforts concerning the Foothills Trail.

Special recognition goes to TWBC President Bob Myrick for his dedicated efforts concerning the Foothills Trail. His advocacy work exemplifies the kind of impact our club can have when we engage with local government and transportation planning.
Supporting Cycling Over Sixty
TWBC continued making an impact by helping make the first Cycling Over Sixty annual celebration a tremendous success on Sunday. Dave Wittenberg and Rick Dinicola provided invaluable ride support, bringing their extensive riding experience to benefit the entire group. The event concluded with everyone gathering at Fika, creating the perfect ending to a wonderful celebration of cycling later in life.

The Power of Community Engagement
This week perfectly showcased what TWBC is all about—being an active, valuable partner in our community's cycling ecosystem. Whether we're advocating for better infrastructure, providing joy through bikeshaw rides, or supporting fellow cycling organizations, our club continues to demonstrate that cyclists are essential contributors to a vibrant, connected Pierce County.
