2024 Ashford Bike and Hike Week

Three of us (Thomas Harrison, Bob Myrick and Charlene Dorward) camped at the Sahara Creek Horse Camp for the Ashford Bike and Hike Week.

Monday was rainy and we stayed in camp.  Tuesday was only drizzling in the morning so we set out on the Old Hershey Road.  It was pretty muddy after the rain and a bit overgrown.  We did some trail clearing and then rode to Elbe on the highway.  We had a good lunch at the Elbe Tavern, where the Wheelmen stopped in 1905 on their way to Longmire.

On Wednesday we were joined by Thomas’s friend Michael.  The four of us rode 57 miles (return) with 3,000’ of elevation gain to Packwood and back on the lovely quiet Skate Creek Road.

On Thursday the three campers rode into Longmire using a back gated entrance.  We had lunch at Longmire and then rode back to Ashford for ice cream.

Riding on the back roads around Ashford is spectacular, and the Sahara Creek Horse Camp is a great basic campground with large sites and lots of trees.
