Memorial Day Weekend was a pleasant escape from work.for the eleven of us who enjoyed the change of scenery and the warm weather of the Tri-Cities. We pitched our tents at a lovely campground on the Columbia River between Kennewick and Richland. Traffic was light and gasoline plentiful. The Tri- Cities Bicycle Club was very hospitable in including us on their Sunday breakfast ride to Pasco (the first time I've ever had Mexican food for break- fast--good!) followed by a tour which included cooling off at a local winery. We got a further tour of Kennewick that night when my hazy memory of directions to a recommended restaurant got us hopelessly lost. Hawkeye found the place with the help of a hilarious yet surprisingly accurate set of directions from a slightly looped lady whom we stopped at a tavern.
The next morning we got behind a hearty campground breakfast featuring
Carol's crispy brown fried eggs. But the three bowls of granola went away
in the first twenty miles of riding hills in a headwind. The winds over there
were a factor which made pedaling either effortless or really tough. But I
would go back again for the sunshine.
SEATTLE-TO-PORTLAND: We're counting down!
Only a month to go before the marathon of Puget Sound bikies. The 200 miles are marked, but as yet there are no applications ready. Call me LE you need one. Amtrak has reserved space for the return trip. Pro-tec helmet manufacturers are sponsoring the cost of making the maps, and R.E.I. inc. will provide t-shirts for the finishers.
The benefits derived from getting ready for this trip has already made it worthwhile. The increased endurance has given us a range on the tandem that has made possible many memorable rides to places as far away as Aberdeen and Winlock (for the best cinammon rolls in the world). Frank and I are both lighter and stronger (with muscles in places where most people don't have places). I've learned a lot of things about long distance stuff. In my on-going research on stoker saddle soreness, I've finally settled on a good old broken-in Brooks leather. Wearing two pair of chamois shorts is a significant help on rides over 75 miles. So is aspirin. Despite my initial reluctance to wear cleats, I discovered what a difference they make. My sore knee disappeared ( the pain, not the knee) after putting on short toe clips to keep my foot from moving .
Kirk recommends eating every thirty miles. Frank recommends eating - peanut butter and honey sandwiches the night before to store glycogen. I like dates and peanuts to tide me over. Pancakes and eggs are easy to digest in the morning, and I swear that there is something magical about cinammon rolls. (If you don't have time to ride to Winlock, try Pearl's in Purdy or the Bavarian in Sumner. Unfortunately, I found out that my favorite lunch of a deluxe Mexican combination plate and Carta Blanca doesn't do much but make me want to go to sleep. Frank almost parted company with his steak sandwich at the top of a hill one time. On STP, we will eat about once an hour, mostly fruit, whole wheat and honey, cheese, and (subtle hint) some of Ruth's cookies.
In next month's newsletter I'll let you know what happened..We will be
praying for a safe trip and a tailwind.
