Greetings my fellow cyclists. April was a crazy weather month as usual, but we lucked out with some good days.
Tom Butler attended the Walk and Roll Summit in Wenatchee on our behalf. He had good weather and some inspiring sessions.
Our Daffodil Classic Bike Ride was held with great weather and a large turnout for Pizza at Route 66.
I was able to attend a big fundraiser in Buckley for the Wilkeson Historical Society. We will be attending several events to help ameliorate the loss in tourism due to the Carbon River bridge closure. You can actually ride from Carbonado to Melmont and beyond to the Kolish Bridge with your gravel bike. You can even continue to the Carbon Glacier entrance of Mt Rainier National Park.
Thanks to Dave Wittenberg, Ray Finch and Rick Dinicola for operating our booth at the Tacoma Bike Swap.
Charlene and I went to the McClinchy Mile on Camano Island. There were about 500 people riding from Stanwood. We had 15% grades on several climbs. We met Dan Russo and several other old friends on the ride.
I attended a Leafline Coalition meeting where we learned about connecting trails in Pierce, King, Snohomish and Kitsap County. We will see the results in King County at the Tour de Cure in Bothell on Saturday, May 2. We are on the Cycling Over 60 team put together by Tom Butler. Our team raised over $10,000 and at this writing is in first place for raising money for diabetes research and other purposes.
In May, you can attend the excellent Skagit Classic, the wonderful Lewis County Historical Ride, the challenging Destiny Dozen put on by our friends at 2nd Cycle and more. Destiny Dozen also has a casual ride across Tacoma. On Saturday, May 30, we have a joint work party and bike ride with Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition. The idea is to start at the Doc Tait Pavilion in Buckley and roll down to South Prairie Creek about five miles.
In June we have the Peninsula Metric Century Ride from Tacoma Narrows Memorial Park.
You can also ride with us during the week, ride evenings with 2nd Cycle, Tacoma Night Riders on Tuesdays, and bike shop rides on Saturdays from Wily and Cascadia shops.
Please join us in May as Junuary is coming with traditional funny weather.
It was heart-warming to see 90+ year old Heinrich Schmidt back on the Foothills Trail after three months recovering from an injury.
