The Recall Overview
Trek has issued a major recall affecting over 75,000 bicycles due to a defective coaster brake system. The recall includes 68,000 bikes in the United States and 6,820 in Canada, with an additional 2,196 bicycles in Europe.
The Safety Issue
The problem involves coaster brakes that are not adequately lubricated with grease, which could cause the brakes to become worn or damaged. This failure could cause the pedals to spin backward without resistance.
Affected Models
The recall impacts Trek Precaliber 12, 16, and 20 bikes from model years 2024 and 2026, as well as two Electra models: the 2026 Sprocket 1 16″ (Pixie Blue) and Townie 1 Rental Step Thru (Blue). Three of the five recalled models are children's bikes.
Current Status
No incidents or injuries have been reported. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has warned of a crash hazard.
Trek appears to desire to send the message that the recall demonstrates a commitment to customer safety by taking action even though no injuries have been reported. The company is providing free repairs through authorized dealers to resolve the issue.
