Federal Bike and Trail Grants Canceled: Time to Take Action

The League of American Bicyclists sent out a call to action today via email.  They are asking anyone who values safe bike infrastructure to reach out to your senators.  Communities across America are receiving troubling news: hundreds of millions of dollars in previously awarded federal grants for bicycle trails, sidewalks, and transportation safety infrastructure are being canceled by the U.S. Department of Transportation under Secretary Duffy.

What's Happening?

The Transportation Department has begun sending official cancellation notices to local governments nationwide, halting trail projects—some already under construction. The stated reason? These safety projects have been deemed "hostile to cars" and "no longer in the public interest."

These weren't experimental or controversial projects. State and local governments applied for these grants based on genuine community needs and priorities. They were awarded funding through proper channels during the Biden Administration. Now, those investments—along with the economic development and safety improvements they promised—are disappearing.

Why This Matters

Safe bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure isn't just about recreation. It's about:

  • Safety: Protected bike lanes and improved sidewalks save lives
  • Economic vitality: Bike-friendly communities attract businesses and tourism
  • Climate action: Active transportation reduces emissions and traffic congestion
  • Equity: Not everyone can afford or should need a car to get around safely
  • Public health: Walkable, bikeable communities promote healthier lifestyles

Washington state and the Tacoma area have been working hard to improve bicycle infrastructure. Federal grants like these are critical to making those improvements possible.

What You Can Do

The League of American Bicyclists is calling on Congress to fight back and stand up for safety projects that serve everyone—whether they bike, walk, roll, take transit, or drive.

Take action today:

Contact your U.S. Senators and ask them to:

  • Oppose the cancellation of these vital safety grants
  • Support funding for multimodal transportation infrastructure
  • Recognize that bike lanes and trails ARE in the public interest
